Little Round Top To Close

Little Round Top To Close

by Diana Loski

Little Round Top
Little Round Top, one of Gettysburg’s most famous landmarks, and one of the places most visited on the famous battlefield, is closing for reconstruction and deforesting. In an effort to keep the area safe for visitors, and in order to render the position more like its 1863 appearance, Little Round Top will be closed to visitors sometime in the spring of 2022. The closure may last over a year.

The closure includes pedestrian traffic as well as that of cars and buses.

For those who hope to get a view of one of the area’s great historical vistas, the month of March is the time to come to Gettysburg.

The National Park Service has not as yet given a definite date for the closure, but has given notice that it will occur sometime during the spring.

For those whose visit will be later in the year, there are still ways to see Little Round Top. Visitors can see it as the Confederates did on July 2, 1863 from the Plum Run Valley directly below the hill (also known as the Valley of Death). Glimpses can be enjoyed from the Wheatfield, as well as from the Culp’s Hill and the Longstreet Towers.

The Gettysburg Museum & Visitor Center, located at 1195 Baltimore Pike, will help to keep visitors updated on the closure and offer ways to see the famous hill.
